Mary LaBianca is a choreographer, educator and dancer. Mary has an MFA in Choreography and Performance from Mills College in Oakland, CA where she was a teaching assistant and scholarship recipient for her graduate studies. She also has a certificate in Bartenieff Fundamentals from the Laban Institute of Movement Studies and a BA from UNC-Asheville in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received support as a choreographer and teaching artist from Philadelphia Dance in Pennsylvania and has presented choreography in the San Francisco, Oakland, Philadelphia, Chattanooga and Nashville communities. Mary is also the Director of Dance Education at the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She teaches dance courses at UTC. Through her work with SCEA she provides mentorship to pre-k through 12th grade educators with arts integration as a professional development model in her work with educators and artists.
Recent choreography and research explore semiotics and communication, dance and technology as medium to explore the relationship between the live and the mediated body, and identity and expression of community through dance. Her recent work “Adapting” was selected and presented at the TN Dance Festival.
