Synesthesia (2011)

As a choreographer and artist the choices I make outside of the studio effect me when I am in the studio.  My practice is not just confined to the time of creating, it is a lifelong pursuit that is part of each breath I inhale and exhale.  For me dance is a form of communication through which the world makes sense and it is integrated into many aspects of my life.  My work resides at the intersection abstract and narrative form. In my current body of work I am investigating limitations.  Small spaces, relocated spaces, limited spaces for communication. I typically explore an idea in many modalities, interested in the interplay between processes; live-ness and mediated, text and the body, social norms and everyday interaction. How the relationship of two elements changes the sensation of space is of great interest to me.   Inspiration comes from a wide range of areas; social interactions, science, visual art and literature are often entry points to a concept for me and are areas I will research and source for movement ideas.  Ideas develop through exploration and improvisation with dancers, their relationship and response to the ideas being a necessary part of the life of the work.  In solo studies, the camera has allows me explore through a similar process with film. I am constantly working on my skills as a listener, observer, collector of ideas, exploring the possibilities of dance and becoming more fully aware in the moment.  The viewer is an active contributor and I pursue creating a space for them to also explore and apply their history. Shifting perceptions from “I” to “we” to “us.”
